Computers
The Oswego Public Library District wishes to provide equitable computer access to all citizens. Please observe the following computer and wireless network policies. In addition to access to the Internet and online databases, the Library computers and laptops also offer Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher and PowerPoint.
Resident Patrons
- Each computer user MUST have their current, valid Oswego Public Library District card and PIN number on hand to use a computer.
- Patrons of high school age and older must sign in to use the computers in the Adult Services area.
- Patrons over the age of 18 must sign a Computer Use Agreement.
- Patrons under the age of 18 must have a Computer Use Agreement signed, in person, by a parent or guardian. Parents have a choice of unsupervised access or supervised access. Supervised access requires the presence of the parent or guardian during computer use.
- We reserve the right to impose a limit of one hour if other patrons are waiting.
- Patrons through eighth grade must sign in to use the computers in the Youth Services area.
- Children age 8 and under must have a Computer Use Agreement signed, in person, by a parent or guardian, and must be accompanied by a parent, guardian, or designated adult when using the computer.
- Children over 8 must have a Computer Use Agreement signed, in person, by a parent or guardian. Parents have a choice of unsupervised access or supervised access. Supervised access requires the presence of the parent or guardian during computer use.
- We reserve the right to impose a limit of one half hour if other patrons are waiting.
Visitors
- Out-of-district visitors may use the computers in Adult Services.
- Each visitor using a computer must present photo identification and sign a Computer Use Agreement.
- We reserve the right to impose a limit of 15 minutes if other patrons are waiting.
General Policies and Procedures
- Use of computer equipment is on a first come, first served basis.
- When printing, the cost is 10 cents per page.
- Files can only be saved to a floppy disk or memory stick.
- Files saved to the C:\ drive may not be re-accessible because of security programs, and will be deleted when the computer is restarted.
- Blank floppy disks may be purchased from the librarian at the reference desk.
- The use of saved files is at the patron's own risk.
- No other outside software or hardware may be used with or attached to library computers.
- The user is responsible for any damage to library computer equipment due to neglect, abuse, or loss, and will be charged the replacement cost for any damaged or missing parts.
- Use of library computers is at the patron's own risk. The Library is not responsible for loss of data or damage to personal devices due to use of computer equipment at its facility.
Wireless Network
- Laptop computers and network cards are available at the Adult Services Reference Desk for use within the library only to valid Oswego Public Library District cardholders of high school age and older. The library card or a photo ID must be shown at the time of checkout.
- Anyone accessing the library's wireless network, including those using their own equipment, must first sign a Computer Use form. Forms for those under the age of 18 require the signature of a parent or guardian.
- Laptop computers should never be left unattended.
- Library staff members are not authorized to assist patrons with their personal computer equipment.
- Laptops should be returned to a librarian at the Adult Services desk 30 minutes before the library closes.
Violations
- Violation of the Computer Use Policy may result in loss of computer privileges. We reserve the right to end a computer session at any time. Types of unacceptable activities include but are not limited to:
- Behaving in a manner that is disruptive to others, including harassment, libel, or slander.
- Destruction of, damage to, or unauthorized alteration of library computer equipment, software, or network security procedures.
- Use of the Internet which in any way violates Federal or State law.
- Unauthorized copying of copyright-protected material.

The Library has no control of the Internet and its resources and assumes no responsibility for the quality, accuracy, or currency of any Internet information. Library patrons use the Internet at their own discretion. The library is not responsible for damages, direct or indirect, resulting form a patron's use of the Internet. Parents of minors must assume full responsibility for monitoring and supervising their children's use of the computers.
