In January 1942, navy nurse Dorothy Still was taken prisoner of war by the Japanese military. Along with eleven other nurses, Dorothy was transferred to an overcrowded, filthy, and violent civilian concentration camp in Manila. Despite their fears, these valiant nurses maintained rank and reported daily to the camp’s makeshift hospital. After the arrival of army nurses, the navy women agreed to transfer to an unknown camp in the countryside. At the new camp, the twelve women built a hospital and provided medical care and hope to thousands of prisoners. All twelve nurses came home, all nursed to the end. Emilie Le Beau Lucchesi, PhD, author of This is Really War: The Incredible True Story of a Navy Nurse POW in the Occupied Philippines, tells the inspiring story of the ‘twelve anchors’ of Los Baños who kept ailing inmates from drifting.
